What is Registry Lock?

Sometimes, a domain name is so important or so valuable that its registrant wants to have control of the name and, in particular, to be sure that its registration can’t be changed without explicit consent. This might apply to any domain name whose potential downtime leads to serious damage.

Registry Lock is the service that offers an extra layer of security. With .frl Registry Lock, not a single property of a domain name can be changed without explicit, manual prior approval.

The Registry Lock service has been specially developed for .frl registrants who want to have control over their domain names, such as banks, government bodies and other institutions, as well as the registrants of names used for e-commerce, news site owners and registrants whose domain names are particularly valuable. The value of a domain name is, of course, very personal. So Registry Lock is in fact for anyone who wants to be able to control any changes to their own domain name.

Registrants that want to apply for .frl Registry Lock should contact their registrar.

Registrars familiar with Registry Lock for other gTLD names will notice that .frl Registry Lock follows a similar procedure.

Registrars that want to apply for a Registry Lock can do so from their CentralNic registrar console. In that same console, the price specification is available.

Activating Registry Lock

  • Like the other services provided by FRLregistry B.V., the Registry Lock service is made available to .frl registrants through registrars. FRLregistry's back-end provider (CentralNic) takes care of the operational aspects.
  • The service is provided for individual domain names, not automatically for all of a registrant’s .frl domain names.
  • To arrange Registry Lock for a domain name, the registrar logs in to the CentralNic registrar console, searches for the domain name and clicks the "Add Registry Lock" button:

Alternatively, check the CentralNic EPP documentation for the corresponding EPP command.
  • The domain name is locked immediately, and the domain name is assigned the following EPP statuses: serverDeleteProhibited, serverTransferProhibited and serverUpdateProhibited.
  • From now on, any change to the domain name will be rejected unless the domain is temporarily (or permanently) unlocked.

Updating a .frl domain with Registry Lock

Updates are arranged as follows:

  • The registrant contacts the registrar for the required update.
  • The registrar sends, from an authorised e-mail address linked to the registrar account, an e-mail to the CentralNic support team, requesting a temporary unlock of the domain name.
  • The CentralNic support team validates the e-mail address of the requestor, and calls the requestor on a known telephone number to confirm the registrar's contact PIN.
  • Once confirmed, CentralNic will unlock the domain name and any changes can be done, just as if the domain name wasn’t covered by the Registry Lock service.
  • The domain name will be locked again [1] when the registrar requests a lock again, or [2] automatically after 24 hours have passed.

Cancellation of Registry Lock

  • The registrant contacts the registrar for the permanent unlock.
  • The registrar sends, from an authorised e-mail address linked to the registrar account, an e-mail to the CentralNic support team, requesting a permanent unlock of the domain name.
  • The CentralNic support team validates the e-mail address of the requestor, and calls the requestor on a known telephone number to confirm the registrar's contact PIN.
  • Once confirmed, CentralNic will remove the lock from the domain name.

Delivery and billing of .frl Registry Lock

  • The Registry Lock service is delivered to the registrant via the registrar responsible for the relevant domain name.
  • Registrars are billed in arrears for the Registry Lock service on a monthly basis.
  • If the registrant of a domain name with Registry Lock requires support, they deal with the registrar (not CentralNic or FRLregistry).
  • Registrars with queries and support requests in connection with the use of Registry Lock may contact CentralNic’s support department by e-mailing support@centralnic.com.
